Research and development of superconducting microwave/millimetrewave and infrared devices and systems

Objetivo

This project co-ordinates basic engineering efforts of scientists in west European countries and in the NIS in the field of superconducting microwave/millimetre wave and infrared devices and systems.

All aspects of superconducting very high frequency devices are concerned, especially communications and radar systems, ground-based radioastronomy, and space-born observatories for remote sensing and radioastronomy (the Swedish ODIN and the European Space Agency's FIRST).

The participating laboratories have mutual research activities in the field of applied superconductivity. Most of the NIS teams will fabricate microwave devices in laboratories of the west European partners and use the devices to perform experimental studies.

A study of the physics and engineering of HTSC microwave devices in the frequency range up to 40 GHz will be carried out and hot electron-based superconducting devices in millimetre and infrared ranges will be studied. HTSC film processing will be optimised and films for microwave device manufacturing will be supplied.

The preliminary results of experiments on mixers, detectors (IR and MMW), filters, and switches will be used in later stages of the project and in industrial implementation. The possibilities of the implementation of HTSC microwave devices in industry will be studied and astronomy and remote sensing applications will be examined.
