Development of optical techniques for the measurement of velocity and temperature in turbulent flows

Ziel

The purpose of this project is to form a network of researchers from both the NIS and western Europe in the area of optical techniques in fluid dynamics. Developments already made by the six groups concerned in the areas of particle image velocimetry, two-phase laser doppler anemometry and liquid crystal thermography, will be extended in order that more general problems involving the simultaneous measurement of velocity and temperature in single and two-phase flows may be tackled. Problems of this nature are of great practical importance in many areas, for example in the safe design of cooling systems for nuclear and processing plant, in the efficient design of engines, in pollution control, in the clean burning of fuel in coal-fired power stations, and in the development of optimal designs for aerodynamic surface junctions such as wing/body junctions on aircraft.

The funding will provide grants for research staff in the NIS, allow an exchange of personnel between western Europe and the NIS and allow the construction of an analysis package for transfer to the NIS.

The main fluid dynamic experimental programme will be conducted in Novosibirsk and Moscow, the development of 3D optical systems being done in Minsk. In Moscow, measurements will be made of the motion of particle jets in turbulent flows, using the integral LDA techniques. In Minsk holographic systems will be developed for the measurement of velocity distributions in three dimensions. The PIV system in Novosibirsk will eventually be replaced by a fully 3D system. A 2D analysis system will be constructed in Edinburgh and taken to Novosibirsk.
