Objective Composite coatings of interest consist basically of a metal matrix in which second-phase particles are incorporated. The synthesis is based on the co-deposition of suspended particles during electrolysis performed under DC or pulse plating conditions. Actual industrial processes are mainly based on the co-deposition of hard particles such as SiC and Cr2C3. The objective of this project is to broaden this co-deposition towards solid lubricants selected with a view to novel applications of composite coatings as lubrication overcoats operating efficiently at temperatures between 25 degrees C and 600 degrees C. Potential solid lubricant particles are MOS2, BN, intermetallics, glasses and metal oxides like TiO2 and BzO3. One major drawback of the presence of second-phase particles is, however, that in general they cause embrittlement of the metal matrix. The development of appropriate ways to avoid that problem will be the main objective of this joint research project. The investigation will be based on an experimental work programme devoted to the effect of synthesis parameters on the co-deposition, and to mathematical modelling of mechanical properties of non-homogeneous materials based on the elasticity theory of materials. The functional properties of such solid lubricant-containing nickel coatings will be investigated in laboratory wear tests at room temperatures and at 600 degrees C.
