Research and development on NbTi superconducting cable for fabrication of novel experimental magnets for the CERN Large Hadron Collider

Ziel

The very large superconducting magnets now under development for the detectors which will be installed on the Large Hadron Collider accelerator at CERN require new superconducting conductors never produced before. The final conductor must carry a current of 20kA in a field of 4T, with a large safety margin considering the stored energy (several GJ).

The development of this conductor will be done in three stages at each of which critical current density will be measured. The properties of the aluminium and of the bonding at the final step will also be characterised. The Kazakh partners, which produces superconducting materials, will fabricate superconducting strand with the required characteristics. From these strands the Belgian partners will produce a 50m cable test length of the conductor with 32 strands. The Russian partners will be responsible for the measurement of the strand critical current at different stages, including the degradation of the critical current of the strand after cabling; the British are responsible for research into aluminium resistivity; and the French are responsible for project co-ordination, cross-checking of critical measurements on strands at different stages, and bonding quality characterisation.
