Regionalism and the regionalisation of reform in Siberia

Obiettivo

This programme will create a network of west European and Russian experts on Siberia, the problems of centre-regional relations and the regionalisation of market reforms in Russia. There will be two joint research projects, one on the politics of Siberian regionalism, and a second on the economic transition in Siberia. This will facilitate cross-European comparisons of the study of the political economy of regionalism and the restructuring of regional economies.

The research programme focuses on Siberia as a mechanism for studying the transition in Russia. As the major resource region in the Russian Federation, Siberia is of paramount importance not only to Russia but also for Europe, particularly as regards European dependence on Siberian gas. The research will concentrate on two areas: the politics of Siberian regionalism, and the regionalisation of market reforms and their impact on the political economy of Siberia.

There will be a series of reciprocal exchanges of researchers and a conference to discuss findings. The results of the research will be disseminated in scholarly monographs and articles.
