Stabilization, industrial restructuring and regional unemployment

Cel

The objectives of this research are to analyze the interaction between macroeconomic stabilization, industrial restructuring and unemployment. The study will investigate whether and how the difficulties in stabilizing the economies of Russia and Ukraine are related with the problems of industrial restructuring, the need to reallocate resources across firms and sectors and to change microeconomic incentives.

In addition, the project will focus on the role of unemployment, and the fear of it, in the process of stabilization and restructuring. The research will also focus on the opposite direction of causality, that going from macroeconomic instability to the difficulties in the restructuring process. A comparative study of the experience of stabilization and reforms in Russia and Ukraine will be produced.

The project will contain country studies on the three areas of the research and a comparative summary intended to draw implications for economic policy. The aim is to produce a monograph to be discussed at a workshop for leading scholars and policy makers of the region.
