Objectif The Process Improvement Experiment (PIE) intends to outline the benefits of applying Object Orientation and the adequate-CASE tools for the development of EFT (Electronic Fund Transfer) software. Although based on "universal" principles, EFT software is subjected to local requirements and wanted in a lot of operating environments. Adapting software to these requirements demands a lot of time and huge investments. Enhancing reusability and portability of the software process would allow faster introduction of new products and improve the access to new markets (faster and at least cost).THE EXPERIMENTThe PIE will cover the analysis and measurement of the current software process and products, the study of Object Orientation and CASE-tools, the introduction and the usage of the OO technique and the sustaining tools, the analysis and measurement of the modified process and the delivered products, the comparison between the two methods, the results and the conclusion.PRODATA employs 80 people, 10 of them are now involved in the OOSA project. At the end of the PIE the software development team is estimated to count 20 people.EXPECTED IMPACT AND EXPERIENCEThe reusability and reliability of written code should likely improve. The process should become better documented, more predictable and better controlled. The development team should acquire the Object Oriented Methodology and the use of sustaining CASE tools. The business should improve for the "time to market" part (which is here very critical).
