An experiment for use case in capturing user expectations in software development projects

Cel

The Jacobson's Use Cases methodology will be employed for capturing user expectations and preliminary requirements in the specific context of the initial phases of an iterative development process which is object-oriented and reuse-oriented. The main objective of the experiment is the introduction of this methodology in Sodalia and the evaluation of its effectiveness with respect to a more traditional and less formal approach in the domain in which Sodalia operates.

THE EXPERIMENT

Sodalia will tailor its "Guidelines for Use Case in User Expectations Gathering" into an experimental plan to exercise procedures for Use Cases in the context of the expectations and early user requirements phase for the IDNM (Integrated Data Network Management) project of Telecom Italia. An existing development team will employ the Use Case methodology to the IDNM project, making comparison against their own past experiences with a traditional methodology (i.e. contrasting the situation to the existing development process).

The Sodalia IDNM project is related to the IDNM product development program, that is an integral part of IT2000 initiative of Telecom Italia and is intended to increase the level of automation of key processes in the management and operation of heterogeneous data networks in order to support the Divisione Clienti Business (DCB) of Telecom Italia in the Customer Network Management area. The experiment will be structured to openly solicit interactions with the client marketing domain experts at Telecom Italia.

Sodalia employs 250 people.

EXPECTED IMPACT AND EXPERIENCE

At the end of the experiment, all concerned participants - customers, requirements team members, and requirements users - will be involved in a survey to qualitatively judge success of the methodology: whether the expectations were met, whether customers were satisfied, whether the quality was acceptable or better than the norm. This survey will be conducted by an unbiased observer, the University of Trento, and will be done by means of a questionnaire. In this way, data on the qualitative improvements due to the introduction of the Use Case procedures and tools can be collected by taking statistical data targeting two reflections of process improvements:

- relative user satisfaction with results
- relative developer satisfaction with the communication process

Thus, the result will be a qualitative gauge of the efficacy of the method and tool at improving the process according to those interviewed relative to their own past experiences and to what they observed during the experiment gathering phase of the IDNM baseline project. Subsequently, the analysis results will be taken into account by the Process Group in order to identify changes to SIMEP, the Sodalia process, to introduce the Use Cases company-wide.
