Supportive action to maximise the performances of leading companies of the European process industry

Objective

The objective of the project is to develop methods, tools and benchmark data, or metrics which the European Process Industries (EPI) can use to :
- assess their strategic direction and organisation structure, and the efficiency of their business processes;
- provide a basis for defining their IT requirements and future IT needs.

The work will build on and contribute detailed data to the generic process industries enterprise model which is to be developed by the PRIMA project.

SAMPLE is an essential, complementary action aiming at ratifying the EPI wide generic work of PRIMA against specific sector and sub-sector needs, with the goal of enhancing/testing/tuning PRIMA results for specific application within certain EPI sector/company profiles. SMEs will be the key beneficiaries of this approach. The work will go beyond the current state-of-the art in supporting performance comparisons across sectors and taking account of differences in the strategic objectives of enterprises.

The approach is to:
- validate the PRIMA enterprise model and develop sector specific interpretations of it, i.e. provide a base on which to select key performance parameters by company critical process.
- identify enterprises, especially SMEs, who represent best practice in the process sector, as perceived by a significant sample of their customers. The aim of the project is to analyse 160 enterprises from 10 sub-sectors of the EPI.
- interview managers in these enterprises, and to gather comparative data for the key performance parameters by company critical process;
- analyse the resulting benchmark data across sectors as well as within sectors, and to incorporate the results in a database.

The main result will be a set of databases containing descriptive and/or quantitative data on best practice on critical process changes, benchmarking indicators by critical process, IT applications and requirements, and best practice on IT strategies.
