EUROPEAN NETWORK FOR RESEARCH INTO FOREST ECOSYSTEMS-RESOLUTION S6

Objective

Background :

In order to improve the sustainability of forestry and as a Europe's contribution to UN's world wide process of forest protection it has been agreed (Strasbourg Resolution S6) that forest ecology needs to be studied more intensively. This should stimulate a protection strategy which is not limited to the conservation of a small fraction of forest land. An ecosystem-based approach is necessary with interdisciplinary collaboration, focused to regionally relevant research subjects transgressing national borders. It will help to underpin research into silviculture and forest management.

The objective is : to establish a representative working group, involving all EU-member-countries and neighbouring countries in East Europe (without financial contribution from FAIR). The final aim is to contribute to sustainable and multifunctional management of forests.

Short description of the project :

The Strasbourg conference (1990), in its resolution S6, the establishment of European working group on research into forest ecosystems. However, it failed to provide the necessary financial means. The CA assembles forest ecologists from many European countries for 4 years to establish a network of scientists, a catalogue of ongoing and needed research projects and to stimulate research at European level.
