Objective The objectives of this research proposal are to modify an existing support matrix, in terms of surface active groups and material properties, to perform as a down stream separation system for bioproducts from bioprocess streams. Research is required to characterise the surface chemistry, develop surface attachment mechanisms and modify the matrix density, pore size and particle grometry for the separation process. Fluidised beds are to be developed to apply this technology to bioprocess stream separations. Problems of matrix modification and application to fluidised bed systems are addressed.
