Robust control of combustion engines

Objective

There has been much recent progress in methodologies for the design of controllers such that the feedback behaviour is robust to changes in the system being controlled. In order to meet new emissions legislation in petrol and diesel engines, more effect transient control will be required (rather than just steady state calibration).
The proposed project is in collaboration with Ford, UK, where much of the modelling and experimental work will be carried out. The project will first derive a phenomenological model of an IC engine and estimate parameters from experimental data. Then a model of the uncertainty will be examined and robust control methods investigated. The final objectives will be to implement and assess such a controller.
