Opac Network in Europe- II

Objective

The project builds on and extends the results of the ONE project. More services will be implemented and new partners will be involved. The project will produce common software adding facilities for interlibrary loan, electronic document delivery and on-line payment capabilities to the common software developed in the ONE project. Demonstrators will include implementations in museums and at sites in Hungary. Users will be professional cataloguers, researchers and library patrons.

Technical approach

The ONE II projects will be based on the following approach:
Extend common ONE facilities to integrate advanced Z39.50 retrieval: item ordering, inter-library loans and electronic document delivery, including user validation, payment mechanisms and multimedia facilities.
Validate the requirements and solutions via user-trials targeted towards professional cataloguers, researchers public library patrons and museums respectively.
Share specifications and relevant technology with two large demonstrators in Eastern and Central Europe.

The project will also establish practical requirements for international document delivery and ILL transactions. Their preferred solutions will influence the library community in Europe.

Key issues

The project will extend the common ONE Z39.50-based search and retrieve services to integrate other related functions. The key issues for the project will be to implement:
item order;
inter-library loans;
copy cataloguing and update;
electronic document delivery.

Impact, users and expected results

A number of important demonstrators will be implemented. These trial services are designed to validate the services among relevant users with different backgrounds and requirements:
professional cataloguers,
researchers,
public library patrons.

These services will accelerate the expansion of the European OPAC Network at a high level of functional interoperability. The common software and services will also serve to integrate new partners such as the National Library of Hungary and new applications areas such as museums into the community of networked systems.
