Objective Research objectives and content The research objectives are oriented in the field of galaxy evolution. 1 - Search for galaxies at high redshift The objective of this work is to detect primeval galaxies at high redshift. This work will use the ultra deep imaging frames observed at the ESO NTT telescope in an optimized combination of four optical bands to reliably detect candidates at z > 4. The main goal will be to estimate the stellar evolution history up to z # 5 to constrain the theoretical models of galaxy formation in their more vulnerable ranges. 2 - How do elliptical galaxies evolve with look back time ? The objective of this work is to study a sample of elliptical galaxies detected in the HDF (deepest high spatial resolution images to date). By measuring the stellar evolution history in terms of photometric properties and the dynamical state of the ellipticals at high redshift, we want to provide new constraints for the evolution of elliptical galaxies from today up to z # 3.5. Training content (objective, benefit and expected impact) This collaboration is oriented to the study of galaxies at high redshift. This field could be considered as a prolongation of my past work (PhD thesis) on the photometric properties of galaxies at low redshift (z < 0.5). The present project will allow me enlarge my expertise in the detection and study of high redshift galaxies and in the interpretation of the stellar evolution of galaxies which will be improved by spectroscopic observations. This experience will be fundamental to develop my future research and to exploit as much as possible the opportunity offered by the future generation of large telescopes (e.g. VLT) which will be dedicated in a significant fraction of their observing time to this kind of cosmological investigation.
