USE OF SURFACE & RHEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES IN STICKIES REMOVAL AND CONTROL

Objective

The objective is to investigate and develop new techniques for the selective separation and removal of stickies based on surface characteristics and rheological properties.

The successful adoption of new stickie removal methods would represent a considerable advance on existing practice and would lead to increased and economic use of low grade fibres. This would reduce the use of high grade fibre derived from wood, whilst maintaining final product qualities.

The research will lead to:

a reproducible test and measurement method for stickies;
the understanding of how colloidal and primary stickies behave in wastepaper systems;
more efficient usage of machinery and stickies control chemicals in mills;
the linking of stickies removal with other stock processing techniques in paper and board mills;
the definition of the important differences which exist between the surface characteristics and rheological properties of stickies and papermaking fibres.
