Bio fuel oil - upgrading by hot filtration and novel physical methods. A supporting action for a demonstration scheme

Objective

Objectives:
The primary objective of the R&D project is to support demonstration of a bioenergy scheme. where bio fuel oil (BFO) is employed as boiler or engine power plant fuel. BFO has potential in becoming a competitive bioenergy alternative in these markets. This project aims in supporting demonstration ventures, and it aims in verifying some critical issues within. Following objectives for the R&D project have been defined:
- To increase the market value of BFO by improving BFO quality as fuel - To improve the utilisation of BFO in power plants and boilers.
Technical approach:
These objectives are pursued in following tasks:
- Development of hot filtering for pyrolysis oil production
- Microemulsion production from BFO and mineral oil
- BFO production in PDU scale
- Handling and storage of BFO, and heath and safety issues related to BFO - Fundamental behaviour of BFO in combustion
- Medium size boiler tests
- Engine tests
- Bio fuel oil markets, biomass production and pre-treatment
The aim is to reduce the ratio production cost/product value of BFO, because this ratio w ill determine the competitiveness. Therefore it is important to involve both potential users and producers to establish proper development criteria, and also to establish a realistic value for BFO. A BFO utilisation strategy is envisioned, where initially microemulsions would be employed in existing equipment without major modifications. Once several uncertainties related to BFO production and utilisation have been solved, 100 % BFO would be used. This will require development in the present light fuel oil (LFO) boiler and engine applications. The stepwise BFO introduction to the markets would minimise potential losses if an unproved step fails.
Expected achievements and exploitation:
Expected achievements include
- An improved. solids free BFO (production in PDU-scale)
- Production of microemulsions in laboratory scale
- Performance data on the production of BFO for three fuels
- Improved understanding of BFO combustion by laboratory experiments - Data on boiler emissions
- Performance and emissions using BFO as engine fuel
- Strategies for BFO market introductions
