Comparison of innovative vocational guidance models for disadvantaged young people in Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain and Sweden

Objetivo

Social and economic change has led to far-reaching differences in the conditions prevailing for the transition of young people to professional life in all European countries. At the level of objective opportunity structures, this concerns both the changes on the labour market, presently characterised by high unemployment, especially amongst young people, as well as drastic changes within the employment system, which have all given rise to new qualification requirements and new forms of work organisation. This project intends to analyse and compare different innovative models for the vocational guidance and counselling of disadvantaged young people in transition from school to work in five EU countries. The partners involved will work on different approaches viewed against the background of their respective national vocational educational systems. The aim of the study is to assess these varying approaches in the light of the specific conditions influencing their respective realisation and examine successful approaches with a view to their transferability to other countries.

Case studies will be conducted in which the respective models will be described in detail and evaluated with regard to their realisation in local and regional contexts. A further element of the case studies will comprise interviews with young people, vocational-training instructors and social workers, as well as political decision-makers in the countries involved. The results of the study are intended to help produce a co-ordinated overall action by vocational education, counselling and guidance institutions in their work with disadvantaged young people.

Impact
The study examines the different vocational guidance models in European countries, thus helping to reveal the problems confronting disadvantaged young people in gaining access to the labour market.
