Catalytic combustion in a sintermetal reactor with an integrated heat exchanger

Obiettivo

In former contracts, the principle of sintered metal reactors was proved (EN 3E-0135-D) and assessed for an example reaction (JOUE-CT89-0019).
In this project, the objectives are twofold: to develop a model to calculate the design of reactors without having to go through elaborate and complex measurements; and to construct a reactor for catalytic combustion of natural gas with very low NOx emissions (<5 ppm).

Traditional Combustion units are associated with high NOx emissions. In this project, catalytic combustion reactors will be developed to show much reduced NOx emissions. The concept will be studied by combining heat transfer and catalytic reaction.

The relation between the main properties of the base material (metal heat conductivity, particle size), sintering process (sintering temperature and time) and the sintered metal matrix (porosity, metal surface) with the matrix heat conductivity and flow properties will be determined and put into a model. This model will be a useful tool for future developments.
In order to prove the concept of integrated heat production and transfer, a 10 kW test reactor will be designed taking into account conversion, process stability, pressure loss capacity and heat transfer.
This reactor will be built and tested for steady state conditions.
