Multilingual language kit - Quality management in SMEs in the metal-processing industry

Objective

The aim of the project is to develop, test and evaluate a multilingual language "lego" kit for continuing vocational training in the area of quality management for SMEs in the metal-processing industry. This kit is designed to make it easier for companies to operate as suppliers for the whole of Europe. The vocabulary and content are derived from business and technology. The languages to be dealt with initially in the project are German, English and Greek. The target group comprises higher management staff and executives in SMEs wishing to move into development, production, purchasing or export in markets abroad. Multilingual quality management skills relating to acquisition, purchasing, production and export must be regarded as being a new key qualification in "learning" European SMEs.

The language modules comprise standard language vocabulary elements, specialist terms, standard phrases and sentences concerning relevant QM topics. These are prepared in such a way that the learner can create increasingly more complex text variations. The differing previous knowledge of the learners is taken into account by modules functioning as set pieces, language routines, set phrases at the lowest level and as specialist language and conceptual vocabulary enlargement at the higher level. Modules also serve as a grammar aid. The vocabularies to be developed will be derived, for example, from the following subject areas: certification in accordance with ISO 9000 ff, business techniques, economics for technicians, dealing with customers and colleagues, TQM, measuring, and materials testing in production. With the programme of foreign-language modules, the project follows the traditional method of foreign-language acquisition through translation.

Impact
The development of language modules provides back-up for vocational training in SMEs which can, with the appropriate language qualifications, expand their ranges of products/services on the European market, thus improving their competitiveness.
