LIQUID MEMBRANES FOR ELECTROASSISTED REFINING AND RECYCLING OF METALS

Obiettivo

The objectives of the work are to develop techniques for the selective extraction of metals from complex mixtures which are commonly encountered in the recycling of nonferrous metals and in the treatment of industrial wastes and byproducts, such as electronic scrap, and ashes of metallurgical processes.

2 industrial methods will be developed: a 2 phase electroassisted solvent extraction technique and supported liquid membrane electrodialysis. The participation of 2 industrial organizations in the project will ensure a direct transfer of the experimental results to practical applications.

The work to be carried out will involve:
study of metal ion extraction across liquid liquid interfaces in the presence of ligands specific to metal ions of interest and under applied interfacial potentials;
synthesis of macrocyclic and macroacyclic ligands for metal ions in different oxidation states and related coordination chemistry, including derivatization of commercially available extractants;
development of a demonstration module for the electroassisted 2 phase solvent extraction technique;
study of coupled interfacial ion and electron transfers for transition metal ions in the presence of hydrophobic ligands;
construction of an electrodialysis supported liquid membrane module for membrane based electroassisted separations;
and process technical assessment and economic evaluation.

The engineering approaches that will be developed will make use of 2 ion extraction methods. Firstly, the strategy previously developed regarding the use of ligands to specifically extract ions under an applied interfacial potential will be used. In the solvent extraction case, the applied potential will be obtained by ionic partition, whereas in the electrodialysis approach, externally applied potentials will be used.

The second approach will make use of a coupled ion redox transfer method based on the use of ligands selective to specific oxidation states of the metal ions of interest.

There are 3 milestones which determine the overall progress of the project:
the successful operation of a 2 phase electroassisted metal ion solvent extraction mixer settler module;
the development of redox extraction methodology;
and the successful commissioning of an SLM electrodialysis module.
