HEATING-COOLING OF THE MINING ENGINEERING BUILDING AT THE NATIONAL TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF ATHENS WITH GEOTHERMAL HEAT PUMPS

Cel

The aim is the substitution of fuel and reduction of electrical consumption by utilizing shallow earth thermal energy heating-cooling of a building. This substitution will result in energy saving and reduction of CO2 and other pollutant emissions.
The objectives is to heat and cool a public building in the heavily polluted area of Athens by means of water-source heat pumps utilising geothermal and solar energy stored in the shallow earth and provided by groundwater and vertical earth heat exchangers (VEHEs).

The heating and cooling demands of a University building of the NTUA, amounting respectively to 1000 kW and 700 kW, will be partly covered by water-source heat pumps using thermal energy of the ground water and of the rocks present in the shallow earth adjacent and underneath the building. The earth will act, therefore, as a heat source during the heating season and as heat sink during the cooling season.
About 15 m³/h of groundwater from a 280m deep borehole and about twenty, 100 m deep VEHEs will supply thermal energy with a temperature of about 20°C, which will be transformed to heating and cooling energy appropriate for the demands of the Mining - Metallurgical Engineering and Electrical Engineering building of the National Technical University of Athens (N.T.U.A.).
The heat pumps should furnish 462 kW heating energy and 105 RT cooling energy to cover part of the demands of the building. The installation will be capable of providing heating-cooling and domestic warm water.
The vertical earth heat exchangers (VEHEs) will be planned and constructed in such a way as to create a seasonal ground heating and cooling energy storage disposable for the needs of the buildings.
