The physics of the ascent, degassing and fragmentation of magma

Cel

The aim of this project is to provide a methodology for
reconstructing the physical characteristics of an eruption from
the ejected fragments. This approach can provide a means for
assessing the past and potential eruptive behaviour of diverse
types of volcano to be found in the EEC countries.

The work will be carried out in the following steps:

Fieldwork to collect ejecta from eruptions with different magma
compositions from different volcanoes (Santorini, GR; Teide, S;
Laacher See, D; Vesuvius, I).

Density determinations and image analysis from two-dimensional
sections will be carried out to characterize the bubble content
and geometry.

Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectroscopy on glassy samples,
scanning calorimetry and dilatometry measurements will be carried
out to study the kinetics of gas exsolution and to reconstruct
their temperature -time paths-.

Laboratory experiments on the extrusion of foams and the
fragmentation of liquids will be carried and theoretical models
developed to elucidate the basic physical mechanisms involved in
fragmentation.

These models will be tested using the geological data.
