ENHANCED USE OF SEISMIC DATA FOR DETAILED BASIN SCALE FACIES MAPPING : INPUT FOR HIGH RESOLUTION HYDROCARBON SYSTEM ANALYSIS

Objectif

The aim of the project is to improve exploration for oil and gas in mature and unexplored sedimentary basins by better utilisation of already existing information. The aim is optimum utilisation of the existing seismic data through combined post- and pre-stack inversion, geostatics and state of the art 3D hydrocarbon migration analysis to improve the basis for exploration decisions.
The innovation is the dedicated use of pre- and post-stack seismic data by inversion as well as the use of geostatistics to derive subsurface geological parameters in basin modelling.

The state-of-the-art evaluation tools within hydrocarbon migration modelling admit a degree of detail in input data far beyond the resolution in input parameters extracted from sparse well data along basin crests alone. To enhance the hydrocarbon migration modelling both new data and new methodologies should be introduced in order to cope with tomorrow's basin evaluation. The main task of this project is to fully utilise the seismic data which is essentially the only information present between well locations. In order to extract lithological and petrophysical information special processing techniques are applied to the seismic data; both pre-stack and post-stack. Furthermore, geostatistics will be used to predict lithological and petrophysical information beyond the seismic resolution to the extent it is deemed of importance to enhance the hydrocarbon migration modelling.
The aim of the project is to substantially enhance the mapping of :
- thickness and lateral extent of reservoir and carrier beds
- thickness and lateral extent of source rocks and carrier beds
- possible porosity of reservoir and carrier beds
- net/gross ratio of source rock/carrier bed.
Beyond what is possible today with current techniques.
The project will derive input data which is much more detailed than is common today in hydrocarbon migration modelling. The aim is to evaluate and optimise this input by performing hydrocarbon migration modelling to test the significance of the input.
The detailed input for the hydrocarbon migration modelling is derived by :
- prestack seismic inversion and AVO modelling
- Post-stack seismic inversion
- Geostatistics
IKU and OD-S have developed unique techniques that can generate the needed input data. These techniques have been commercially available for oil companies for a number of years and have succesfully penetrated the market. The main tasks of the project are to :
- Integrate and utilise different techniques for lithological and petrophysical prediction.
- Prepare the shear volume of data to process, which is not internally consistent.
