INNOPAX - INNOVATIVE PV INTEGRATION IN EXISTING BUILDINGS IN DK, IT AND NL

Objectif

For substantial electricity production by PV in Europe, grid connected systems in the built environment will become a necessity. Besides integration of PV in future new houses and commercial buildings there is a gigantic potential for the integration of PV in existing buildings. It is essential that the PV panels will be integrated architectural to convince the building market that PV is a real building product for high quality buildings of aesthetically value. For the introduction of these systems, further development of building elements and building concepts are needed. In this project several innovative architectural integration techniques for existing dwellings and commercial buildings will be demonstrated.
Next to a higher acceptance by the building market a price reduction has to take place before PV systems will be used on a large scale for energy production. Therefore it is necessary that the PV systems have more functions than only the production of electricity. In this project PV elements are used as fully grown building elements, with aesthetical aspects and thermal or daylighting qualities.
The project will also demonstrate how local authorithies and utility companies can contribute to the introduction of the market for PV-projects in Europe and they are in good position to affect the users.
In short the aims of this project are to demonstrate to builders and architects the high quality and high diversity of integration techniques that are possible with PV panels for existing buildings and to demonstrate the advantages of multifunctional PV systems in northern and southern Europe.

The proposal covers building integration of PV-modules in five building projects, two in Denmark, two in The Netherlands and one in Italy. A total of 90 kWp will be installed.
DENMARK :
- The housing project: Frederiksberg Housing Foundation, who is very interested in "green solutions", is the owner of a housing block from 1930 with 5 storeys and 90 apartments. In this project 20 kWp of crystalline PV-modules will be integrated as an overhang as well as on the facade of new built innovative Solar Ventilation Towers.
- The hospital project : The County of Copenhagen wants to show awareness of renewable energy by masking a significant landmark for renewable energy in Copenhagen and in that way they wish to influence the further development. It was therefor chosen to facade integrate approximately 440 m² amorphous PV-modules on a 25-storey high hospital building from 1976. Furthermore the hospital has an extremely high electricity use, the PV-facade can be used for preheating ventilation air and will also protect the concrete surface.
THE NETHERLANDS:
Rotterdam Housing association OWG is planning to integrate PV during the renovation of 112 dweliings, divided over two building blocks from the 1950-60's. Above the top gallery of each building light transmitting PV panels will be integrated. The PV material will be mono-crystalline Silicon. Per building block approx. 180 m² will be covered with PV, adding up to a power of 17.5 kWp per building. It would be the first time that PV is used in the refurbishment of such large residential buildings.
ITALY:
A children's museum project. The building used in this project, was built as a storage house in the early '20, using the Eiffel methods, will refurbished as exhibit hall for the children's Museum of Rome. Goal of this project is to achieve a successful integration of PV roof application, that will improve the energy efficiency of the building. At total of 15 kWp will be integrated in two different structures : 5 kWp skylights and 10 kWp as shading device.
