Objectif Demonstration of the PEM fuel cell, supplying an only gas supplied household with heat and power. Testing the PEM in real applying conditions, proving the availability, the applicability for household supply, the efficiency and maintenance promised by the manufacturer and the long-lastingness of the cell stack and other components.The PEM fuel cell, manufactured by American Power Corporation, USA, is the first plant ready for application using a polymer electrolyte membrane (the so-called Residential Power Generator, RPG). The R&D phase is just finished and the first test units without heat utilization are sold within the USA for a first testing period. A second series with CHP will be sold to Europe. The production of cogeneration units is planned in Europe, Ireland. The PEM FC planned for the gas house in Machern will be the first worldwide for CHP-application. The PEM FC will be tested under real conditions for one year and the results will be published for potential investors and for the manufacturer for revision of the plant for further production. There will be a lot of interest in this technology and potential investors are looking for a plant being optimized and available for low costs and without the "operational problems of the first days". After the testing phase there will be a start for a mass-production (maybe in the year 2000) of the RPG as CHP-plant for the european market at Fabricated Products (proposer 3); a contract manufacturer of APC in Ireland.
