FIELD VERIFICATION OF NUCLEAR MAGNETIC RESONANCE LOGGING WHILE DRILLING SYSTEM

Objetivo

The objective of this project is to develop an instrument for logging-while-drilling to measure the magnetic resonance properties of sedimentary formations in order to evaluate the producibility of oil and gas reservoirs. This new technology will allow to investigate the formation while drilling. Thus the overall process of oil and gas recovery can be substantially accelerated, since wireline logs are no longer required. Decisions on directional changes in the formation will become much more easy. Also more marginal fields can be equally utilized because of the enhanced evaluation capabilities. The "magnetic resonance logging", as planned to be introduced as a drilling evaluation tool, has been successfully developed since 1990 for wireline applications only. Finally, the radioactive sources as currently used as state-of-the-art in measuring density and neutron porosity index with "Triple Combo" tools, especially in the drilling situation, can be replaced by the proposed logging-while-drilling technology, which does not require dangerous radioactivity. This is a considerable improvement in terms of safety and environmental protection.

It is the objective of this project to introduce a new service for measuring the magnetic resonance relaxation log-while-drilling, and providing the customer with a complete petrophysical interpretation based on this log in conjunction with other standard LWD. The service includes :
- a downhole tool for real-time data acquisition, memory storage, and basic analysis of the magnetic resonance relaxation curve. The basic analysis, memory storage, and basic analysis of the magnetic resonance relaxation curve. The basic analysis yields total porosity and free fluid porosity.
- a surface system for real-time display of the measured total porosity and free fluid index; the surface system is also capable of downloading, computing, and plotting the individual magnetic resonance relaxation curves and their Laplace transforms.
- a data link to a geoscience center. The geoscience center will perform a more refined interpretation of the memory download magnetic resonance relaxation curves.
Scope of the project is to demonstrate that the new service can substantially improve the petrophysical evaluation of hydrocarbon bearing formations while drilling and thus optimize the hydrocarbon recovery by predicting more accurately the reserve and the producibility.
The project will be split into 5 phases : the manufacturing design, the manufacturing of the NMR-LWD systems, the assembly of the tools and installation of the service, the commissioning and the evaluation and monitoring.
