INCREASE OF EFFICIENCY OF A GAS TURBINE UNIT BY MEANS OF AN AIR INTAKE COOLING DEVICE

Objetivo

Portucel Viana intends the extension of the existing industrial power station for paper production. The planned extension is to be implemented on the Portucel Viana site in Viana do Castelo, Portugal. It includes the renewal of an existing steam turbine. In future, working on the base of combined heat and power generation, the whole plant is to cover the demand for process steam and the demand for electrical power for the complete paper production. The aim is to achieve a higher efficiency from the primary energy used, so that justice is done to the demand for saving resources and to the reduction of air pollution, one of the main features of the plant is its economic efficiency, only natural gas has been stipulated as the fuel for the new section of the plant.
Licensing procedure and design is made now, results will be available in 2000.
The plant concept is based on the existing plant that will continue to be operated independently after the planned extension is completed, whereby the flexibility and the availability of the plant as a whole will be influenced in a positive way. The existing plant mainly consists of a black liquor boiler and a multi-fuel boiler for producing process steam as well as an extraction-condensing type steam turbine. The latter produced the required process steam via two extractions as well as electrical power. A gas turbine with a heat recovery boiler will be installed parallel to the existing boilers. The combustion air flows through a cooling system before entering the compressor. This application is not existing technology for gas turbines of the 25 MW class. The innovation is the utilisation of an air cooler situated between the filter stages of the air inlet of a gas turbine plant with the goal to achieve increased capacity, additional dust removal and lower NOx emissions. The increase in capacity will be achieved by cooling of unsaturated intake air so that a humidity of 95% will be achieved. The cooling of the intake air will increase the mass flow of air through the gas turbine and thus increase capacity. The additional dust removal effect by use of the air cooling system, together with the conventional two-stage dust screening system, will decrease the capacity loss of the gas turbine which is normally caused by fouling of the compressor blading. The configuration and design of the air inlet system with air cooling unit has to be designed in a way in order to minimise pressure losses. This will maximise both electrical capacity and efficiency. The air cooling unit will be installed together with a gas turbine unit which will utilise the highest technical standards of the industry with the demand for low fuel consumption, high reliability, and minimum need for maintenance. Air cooling units have been installed together with heavy duty gas turbines. Therefore some experience on that subject is available. However detailed examinations about the performance of an air cooling system are not know yet. The economic efficiency of and benefits from the utilisation of an air cooling system with special respect to NOx emissions shall be confirmed by use of appropriately control systems and evaluations. From these conclusions for the optimisation of the process can be drawn. The evaluation of the additional electric energy by use of an air cooler is based on the assumption that the air will be saturated up to a relative humidity of 95%. An optimisation of the plant could be possible. The reduction of emissions and the decrease of the compressor fouling effect cannot be quantified at this time. Operation results have to be collected and evaluated for this purpose.
