Development of lightweight stiff static sheet structures in gamma titanium aluminide (DOLSIG)

Objective

The program will use y-Titanium Aluminides to increase thrust to weight ratios and improve fuel efficiencies of gas turbine aero-engines so as to achieve competitive life cycle costs coupled with minimised emissions. Society will benefit by improved environment, reduced cost of flights to enhance European integration, increased employment levels and prosperity from improved competitiveness, and maximised manufacturing commonality. The innovation is to replace heavy sheet nickel alloy components with a high temperature capability (800°C) material that is non-burning, has half the density, and has competitive specific strength and stiffness. The project will deliver design-and-make capability for the range of structural sheet components stretching from the engine combustor to the exhaust sections. Exploitation will be through material application to aero-engines followed by cross fertilisation of the technology to non-aerospace sectors notably via strong automotive links. The exploitation will be underpinned by the partners' versatile production facilities that will guarantee material stock for the supply chain.
