Combined effects of electromagnetic fields with environmental carcinogens

Objetivo

Only a few studies have addressed possible carcinogenic effects of electromagnetic fields (EMF) from mobile phones. This study tests possible co carcinogenic effects of weak EMFs with environmental carcinogens. Both in vivo and in vitro approaches are used. The animal study investigates the combined effects of EMF exposure with mutagenic compound (MX) present in drinking water. The endpoints include carcinogenesis and genotoxicity. In the in vitro part, two cell lines are used for studying the effects of the EMFs alone or in combination with MX or the herbicide vinclozolin. The endpoints include probable mechanisms for cocarcinogenesis, such as oxidative stress, cell proliferation and apoptosis. The animal and cell culture results will be integrated for final conclusions concerning
1) relevance and adequacy of the chosen models for studies on cocarcinogenesis,
2) potential of RF exposure to act as a co carcinogenic agent
3) need for further studies.
