Mini-grid construction kit for rural electrification with renewable energies ('MINI-GRID-KIT')

Objetivo

Objectives and problems to be solved:- Development of construction kits implementing both supply components and typical loads for rural electrification in Europe and South East Asia. The innovative part will be an energy management integrating knowledge of the used components. This will increase the rate of exploited renewable energy and therefore will lead to a cost reduction.- An account mechanism will be developed that allows system suppliers and utilities to sell energy and not only the systems themselves. Variable energy prices will be included and aspects of multi-user village grids are taken into account. - An easy-to-handle knowledge based system will help energy planners to select their best option of a mini-grid-construction kit, and to conduct a quick pre-feasibility study for the selected RET-system for their specific application. Description of the work:- After the evaluation of the needs in the target regions the loads for integration into the construction kit will be determined. Together with the supply components the construction kit itself will be designed with respect to different category sizes for an easy implementation of supply components and an easy adoption of the pre-defined loads. After a review of energy management strategies the EMS will be developed taking into account known supply and known load components with the aim to increase the rate of exploited renewable energy. Load management will assure highest reliability of the most important applications.- After a review of existing solutions for multi-user systems and identification of problems a strategy will be developed with regard to social aspects when a limited amount of renewable energy has to be shared to multiple users. A prototype counter for selling renewable energy will be developed taking into account the mentioned aspects including variable energy prices. Two field test sites - one in Europe and one in South East Asia - will be identified. There the Mini-Grid-Kit with the counter prototype will be tested.- Load profiles for Mini-Grids will be developed and categorised. The knowledge based system "Paddies" will be expanded to match all applications for the Mini-Grid-Kits. Neural Networks will be applied to make it a self-learning system. This system will be linked to internet based simulation software to calculate energy output and economic efficiency. Suitable configuration software will be adopted to the needs of Mini-Grid Construction Kits leading to certified and tested system configurations. Expected Results and Exploitation Plans: The project's results will be the concept for a construction kit for mini-grid electrification including supply and typical loads for rural electrification. The energy management and the development of a special counter will allow to sell energy instead of the systems themselves. Two prototypes will be operated in a field test. After completion of the project a software with an integrated knowledge based system will be available to conduct pre-feasibility studies.
