Infrared spectroscopy of ozone related atmospheric constituents

Objective

The main goal is an updating of atmospheric data bases with improved spectroscopic information for the following 6 molecules:
CIO (chlorine monoxide)
HOCl (hypochlorous acid)
H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide)
NO2 (nitrogen dioxide)
COF2 (carbonyl fluoride)
CINO2 (nitryl chloride)

The methodology of this collaboration is to use a variety of experimental and theoretical approaches that will achieve results with an accuracy distinctly superior to existing data.

Experimental methods

Each molecule of interest will be investigated by at least two experimental groups (with the exception of the nitryl chloride molecule which will be investigated by only one group). Different experimental techniques (especially concerning spectral regions and spectral bandwidths) will be applied which guarantee an appropriate validation of the results:

- Fourier transform spectroscopy (in all regions)
- diode laser spectroscopy (in the IR)
- tunable far infrared spectroscopy (in the FIR)

Theoretical methods

The theoretical methods used to analyse the experimental results will be based on the highest level quantum molecular theory and will made use of:

- perturbational treatments
- Direct Numerical Diagonalization (including resonance effects)

Spectral regions

The experimental work will be done in the infrared spectral region (5-1000 mm), especially in the :

1. 10 mm region 800-1200 cm-1
2. transition region 300-500 cm-1
3. far infrared below 200 cm-1
