Obiettivo The project proposal is designed to overcome a shortfall that has been observed in the technology transfer process and exploitation of European based innovations. More specifically, the project is a concentration and co-ordination of European based resources skilled in both the science of cancer and the intellectual property management and exploitation of such novel technologies generated from European cancer research centres. The aim of the project is to demonstrate that the results of medical research are best exploited by technology transfer experts who are dedicated to and have a deep understanding of the technologies they are exploiting.Together the Consortium will be able to review the current state of cancer research with regard to intellectual property and commercially exploitable opportunities. Thereafter, once key European cancer research institutes have been identified, the skills of the Contractors will help identify and exemplify key intellectual property opportunities; protect them through the prosecution of patents; propose strategies for their scientific development; analyze and undertake the best exploitation route; and ultimately accelerate the process of bringing the benefits of science to the cancer patient. This project will have additional Community wide benefits as it will:Act as a catalyst for the formation of new start-up biotechnology SME's (CRCT has already formed five new biotech companies in the UK);Improve the Health and Quality of Life of the Community;Provide a source of income back to the research institutes from the effective exploitation of Community research; and Provide a 'Model of Best Practice' for the successful exploitation of high technology based research.The project envisages overcoming problems that are often seen in the exploitation of new European cancer research technologies:Overlooking commercial opportunities due to lack of commercial awareness;Failing to establish a patent position or establishing a poor patent position;Failing to exemplify the technology;Failing to protect Intellectual property because of lack of funds;Failing to patent or exploit successfully due to lack of resource;Failing to choose the best exploitation strategy due to lack of experience or knowledge in the cancer field and;Failing to negotiate the best terms due to a lack of comprehensive industrial contacts and cancer therapeutic/diagnostic market knowledge.The Co-ordinator, Cancer Research Campaign Technology Limited in London, has been quoted many times as an example of an organisation in the UK with a proven track record in technology transfer. It was set up as one of the first European Technology Transfer Companies as a means to protect and commercialize intellectual property originating from the laboratories of The Cancer Research Campaign which has an annual research spend in excess of 75 million Euro's. CRCTecnology have considerable experience in working with cancer researchers and in developing effective patent exemplification and commercial exploitation strategies.The Istituto Europeo di Oncologia (European Institute of Oncology) in Milan, is one of Europe's leading cancer research centres with a worldwide reputation for excellence both in laboratory work and in conducting clinical trials for new cancer therapeutics.The German Cancer Research Centre (Deutches Krebsforschungszentrum) in Heidelberg has more than 60 divisions working in the Cancer field and is situated in one of Germany's key 'BioRegions', the Rhein-Neckar-Dreieck BioRegio. It has its own technology transfer office which like CRCT has been concentrating on the cancer field.
