Cel To investigate sources of design faults in computer control of hazardous plants and to improve methods to mitigate their impact. This work concerns the effects upon the safety of hazardous plant of the design faults which are an inevitable consequence of system complexity. The work comprises two interlocking themes. The first of these concerns the important case of design faults in computers that are used in the control of hazardous plant, and in particular faults in the software in such computers. A second theme concerns the possible use of these new techniques and methods, mainly developed for achieving and assessing safety in software, to gain greater control over the effect of design faults in more general complex systems, including ones which do not depend upon computers for their safety. As far as possible, such assessments should be numerical, since the ultimate objective is a proper quantitative evaluation of the safety of the overall plant. However, there are many cases where this may not be possible, and these will treated more qualitatively. Indeed, an important issue will be the interplay between those sources of evidence that are amenable to a hard, quantitative scientific treatment, and those that are of necessity more subjective. The project will investigate : the state of the art in design; the development of a judgemental framework; the investigation of design reliability both in general and for specific classes of system including PLCs and expert systems. It includes case studies coordinated by the industrial partners and an investigation of the industrial impact of the research.
