Design of new environmentally friendly self-adhesive materials (DEFSAM)

Cel

Self-Adhesive Materials, or Pressure-Sensitive-Adhesives (PSA), are progressively replacing other types of glues for most non-structural bonding applications due to their safe and easy handling. However the empirical strategy which has been used for the development of a first generation of products is no longer sufficient to solve existing problems, particularly as environmental and health regulations restrict the use of harmful solvents in chemical processing. We will develop an understanding of the reasons why self-adhesives stick using modern scientific tools and methods probing mechanisms at the microscopic and molecular level. The PSA, the design of a new testing method to probe instant adhesion (tack) and a software tool able to predict the properties of a PSA from the molecular structure of its components.
Project's actual outcome at month 18:

- Validation of the potential of video tack test as a novel PSA test for quality control and development;
- First results on the relationship between rheological parameters, molecular structure and adhesive performance for SBC-based adhesives and acrylic based adhesives;
- First results on the relationship between long-term performance and microscopic debonding mechanisms;
- Development of a methodology for the rheological modelling of PSA in a large strain and free surface situation.
