Objectif Most European waste management strategies include substantial increase of energy recovery from wises at lower cost than at present. It this context one critical issue is sludge treatment. In order to use sledges in gasification or fluidized bed incineration processes which offer highest energy recovery, sledges need to have > 85 % dry content. Mechanically dewatered sledges have 40 - 50 % dry contents today and need extra -400 MJ / ton of dry sludge for incineration. The project aims at developing an innovative mechanical sludge treatment system with integrated crushing - dewatering - palletising based on a special screw extruder. The dewatering reaches 85 % of dry contents and > 90 % by simple steam release of pellets. Similar concepts had failed in the past but recent technical advances enabled SME proposes to prove the feasibility. Together with researchers, engineering companies and end users e.g. in pulp paper and waste recycling they want to develop an industrial system.
