Selective extraction of minor actinides from high activity liquid waste by organized matrices

Objectif

High activity waste, which contain long life minor actinides, are currently vitrified for their storage in geological formation. In order to decrease the potential toxicity of this wastes the selective removing of these minor actinidesis studied in order to destroy them by transmutation. Currently the separation of americium and curium is a three stages process. Preceding projects showed the potentialities of the functionalized calixarenes which make possible to obtain a high intra class selectivity, for example for the alkali cations (separation cesium/ sodium) or discrimination of different lanthanides with respect to their size. In this project, calixarenes aimed to recover in one step americium and curium will be synthesized and studied. Moreover the process of extraction of cesium from the H. A. solutions by calixarenes-crown6 will be tested on real solutions in order to show the capacity of calixarenes to be implemented on H.A. solutions.
During this project, 160 extractants were synthesised by the universities of Madrid, Mainz, Parma, Twente, Micromod, Katchem and the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry of Rez: calixarenes, cavitands, tripodal compounds, beads or dendrimers bearing different ligating sites like soft and hard donor groups, CMPO, malonamide, glycolamide, COSAN, TTFA...
