Objectif Radioactive contamination is one of the most urgent environmental problems. In Europe, the Arctic is the most critical region, with a huge load of dumped radionuclides. Strontium-90 (Sr-90) is the most dangerous nuclide, because it enters the human food chain and is incorporated in the bones, where it remains for life, due to its lifetime of 28 years. Liquids like water and milk are the main vectors for Sr-90 intake, but no on-line in situ analytical instrument exists to monitor contamination near the Drinking Water Standard. The proposed Sr-90 detector is based on novel multi-channel photomultipliers, allowing to construct instruments of low weight and low power consumption, capable of on-site remote controlled and solar-powered operation. Above detectors are ideal for monitoring nuclear facilities, to raise instant alarm in case of leakage and are needed in long-term remediation efforts, such as removal of Sr-90 from groundwater.
