Genetics open days in europe

Obiettivo

The GEOD project proposes the organization of 5 conference events (the European Human Genome Summit in Sestri Levante, Italy, and four Genetics Open Day conferences in London, Milan, Heidelberg and Barcelona) included in the European Science and Technology week, as well as a European Award for Journalism in Genetics to improve the understanding among European citizens of the social effects of research on the human genome and promote the press coverage of these issues. This is a sector unlike any other in the direct and deeply personal effects it has on the life of citizens. Moreover, the ethical and juridical framework for genetic research is currently being elaborated in most European member states and the decisions to be made in regulating this sector will profoundly affect the development of both academic and industrial research in Europe in the coming years. The project intends to develop a larger and informed debate on these topics with the active participation of the media to reach the highest number of citizens. The events outlined in the project should be seen as a first step in establishing a European interdisciplinary forum on the effects of this research and open to specialists of different disciplines from lawyers to journalists and scientist
