Genetics of radiation induced cancer: identification and mapping of germline and somatic mutations determining predisposition

Ziel

The project directly responds to the call to identify genes determining individual susceptibility to radiation-induced cancer. The experimental goals are to map and subsequently identify these genes. The benefits of this study will be the provision of individual risk assessments through genetic analysis, and a greater understanding of the biology of radiation carcinogenesis. The participants will conduct a series of animal experiments using the molecular genetic techniques of quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping and loss of heterozygosity (LOH) analysis. Susceptibility to five common radiogenic tumour types affecting bone, gut, mammary, lung and lymphopoietic tissues will be studied. Through sharing of data with other consortia it is anticipated that a comprehensive set of genes determining susceptibility can be identified.
