EPR dose reconstruction with teeth : in-situ measurements, determination of organ doses, and application at Mayak ('DOSREC')

Obiettivo

Retrospective dosimetry is part of evaluations of past radiation exposures events and of radio-epidemiological studies.Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurement of extracted teeth is the main method for reconstructing externalphoton exposures that have occurred long time ago.

The proposed work is:
i) to explore EPR measurements of absorbed dose in teeth inside the human mouth;
ii) to develop a procedure to convert the measured absorbed dose in teeth to organ doses;
iii) to verity the new developed methods for workers on Mayak with reliable occupational dosimetry (after 1961) and to apply into Mayak workers for a period with uncertain occupational dosimetry (before 1954) and;
iv) to analyse for a Mayak cohort (18 000 workers of the nuclear reactor, the radiochemical plant and the plutonium processing) the cancerogenesis in organs with dominantly external exposures and explore the implications of uncertainties of dose estimates to cancer risk assessments. Results will be a considerable extension of the application range of EPR dose reconstruction with teeth and an Improvement of the understanding of cancer risk after protracted external exposures.
