Gasoline direct injection---low emission levels by engine modelling

Obiettivo

The proposed project focuses on the development of a CFD based predictive simulation tool for the combustion and mixture preparation processes of a gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine with stratified charge. This objective shall be reached by combining approaches which have already performed very successfully for the Coherent Flame Model (CFM), the G-equation approach and the Representative Interactive Flamelet (RIF) approach. Since the processes of spray formation and atomisation strongly influence the subsequent combustion process, spray modelling for GDI injectors will also be part of the project. The modelling is supported by direct numerical simulation for spray and combustion. Validation will be done by comparison to spray experiments conducted in a high-pressure vessel and to experiments in an engine with optical access.
