Synchrotron microanalysis: accurate elemental analysis on the microscopic level (MICRO-XRF)

Objetivo

This project investigates the comparability and traceability of multi-elemental chemical analysis at the ppm or sub-ppm level in micro-m-sized samples (existing CRMs are heterogeneous at this scale). Microbeam synchrotron radiation XRF (m-SRXRF) will be developed as a primary analytical method and used as certification / reference for other 'beam type' methods and for the development of new CRMs. The project is based on the continued development of numerical modeling techniques for simulating x-ray/matter interactions and their comparison with measurements using 2 micro-SRXRF instruments to be developed. The project includes the micro-characterization of existing CRMs, intercomparison of micro-SXRF with other techniques (SIMS, XPS, PIXE, AES) and feasibility studies for a new generation of CRMs for microscopic analysis. The project will result in the establishment of new EU networks for microbeam analysis and possibly the elaboration of new protocols.
