Development of decision support systems for the admission of pesticides

Obiettivo

To develop decision support systems for the admission of pesticides at local, regional, national and European scale.

1. At the local scale, scientific concepts with respect to exposure and ecotoxicological effects of pesticides, which will form the basis of the decision support system will be developed and/or elaborated. Data to assess exposure and ecotoxicological effects will be obtained in a number of experimental studies and from results published in the literature. Variations of concentrations and of effects with time will receive most attention.

2. At the regional scale (groundwater abstraction area, brook) variations both in space and in time, as well as public health problems will be taken into account. The conceptual model developed at the local scale will be generalized. The effects of a single pesticide and the combined effects of several pesticides on public health will be treated as a pilot case.

3. For the larger scales (national, European) spatial variability will be predominant and concepts developed for smaller scales will be generalized and simplified in this sense. These concepts will be compared and calibrated against monitoring data on occurrence of pesticides and ecotoxicological and toxicological data.

4. As a basic instrument, a data base covering the various aspects from the physical and chemical properties of pesticides, their use and effects, up to admission procedures and criteria, will be developed. The database will be in form of a geographic information system.
