An innovative SATellite-based public Internet terminals Network

Objectif

SATIN will offer high speed Internet and multicast services for info kiosks at frequently attended places deploying a return channel satellite system. End-users will be able to send queries through a VSAT satellite uplink from the kiosk and to receive the requested service again via satellite. All operations will be managed by a server within the network operation centre of the satellite ground station. Results will be validated in a public trial.

Objectives:
SATIN will develop technologies and architectures for satellite interactive multimedia IP network and services. SATIN will offer high speed internet and multicast services for kiosks at frequently attended places as village centres, bus stations, rest areas, deploying a return channel satellite system. SATIN will enable end-users to send queries at high speed and low cost through a VSAT satellite uplink from the kiosk and to receive the requested service again via satellite. All operations will be managed by a server within the network operation centre of the satellite ground station. SATIN will offer software tools for content providers completing their communication chain.

Work description:
The SATIN system will be composed of a central Hub station and remote client stations (Kiosks).

The Hub is the focal point of all applications: it has a high-speed connection to the Internet; it also includes a Multicast server module - the latter being connected (by dedicated lines or through the Internet) to several content providers. This server handles the broadband distribution of application content, namely performs scheduling, streaming and caching. The Hub also includes the Network Management System, which is responsible for monitoring and control of the network elements. The client Kiosk includes a satellite access terminal, the local agent of the multicast server, and the Kiosk database and touch-screen user interface.

In addition to the RTD efforts of system definition and network architecture design, we have defined the four main modules requiring research and development, corresponding to the above description:
- broadband distribution
- network operating centre
- client device
- application.

The system includes many complex algorithms in its different modules, some of which have to work "across the whole network", such as:
- the MAC (media access control) algorithm, which is a key ingredient to ensure message reliability and high level of spectrum efficiency for the SATIN network;
- the central content handling and distribution algorithms, which enables the content to be segmented, to be multicast at off-peak hours or - if needed - in real time, takes care of several distribution modes, etc.

Milestones:
Month 4 - Systems and User Requirements
Month 9 - Preliminary Design Review: Design of Application, Multicast Server, Kiosk, Network Operating Centre
Month 14 - Critical Design Review of all components
Month 18 - SATIN Components finalised
Month 22 - Trial Evaluation results on Integrated SATIN system
Month 24 - Final report on SATIN evaluation.
