Objective

Broadcasting services and mobile communications services will be integrated into the Multimedia Car Platform (MCP). The objective is to provide a transparent access to multimedia services on the basis of existing and upcoming radio topologies, such as GSM/GPRS, DAB, DVB-T and UMTS taking into account the specific needs of the automotive environment. Interoperability between broadcasting and mobile communications networks will open up a whole new dimension for users in the information society. In this workMCP will address the action line IV.5.2. The first mobile multimedia terminal will enable users to select from a bouquet of applications and data based on different network topologies and services. The multimedia car platform will manage and handle the tye of available network access, terminal decoding capacity, user preference in terms of delay, quality and delivery modes.

Objectives:
The main objectives of MCP are:
- To design innovative mobile multimedia services including use cases,
- To specify and implement the architecture for interoperable hybrid networks,
- To provide the technical means in order to make the MCP system transparent to the final user,
- To integrate and to combine communications, entertainment and navigation in the Multimedia Car Platform,
- To build the first mobile multimedia terminal and demonstrate it at major events
- To foster convergence between broadcasiing and mobile communications networks and services.

Work description:
The purpose of the Multimedia Car Platform (MCP) is to offer new communication, navigation and entertainment services for car drivers and passengers. The Multimedia Car Platform will carry its users to the broadband multimedia world. Interoperability between broadcasting and mobile communications networks will add a whole new dimension for multimedia in the car. To reach the overall goals of the MCP project and the technological objectives the MCP project is organised in three phases.
In Phase 1, a strictly market-oriented approach is applied which adopts the user perspective by specifying the technical and commercial requirements for the MCP project. Key players in this process are car manufacturers, terminal equipment manufacturers and user groups. It also takes into account the point of view of broadcasting and mobile communications operators on how to evolve the current infrastructure towards hybrid networks and service and content/program providers to determine on how to exploit the MCP technology and new mobile multimedia services.
Phase 2 will lead to the definition and specification of the network, service and MCP terminal architecture. Within this phase major effort will involve interface and protocol specification and overall system and service desgn.
The detailed specification of the system architecture will lead to Phase 3 and the development and hardware implementation of the MCP terminal. The hardware demonstrator will be tested in laboratory measurements and field trials. Finally, the complete MCP system will be demonstrated at major trade fairs and exhibitions.

Expected Results: First mobile multimedia terminal in Europe, new mobile multimedia services in Europe, dynamic usage of time and frequency for data and television services, convergence between broadcasting and mobile communications taking into account other specifications and APIs.
