Radiobiology Network for Radiation Protection (NET-EULEP)

Ziel

We want to establish a European radiobiology network, specifically aimed at imp roving the state of radiation protection. The network will be together laboratories concerned with different biological aspects of radiation and dosimetry of internally deposited radionuclides. It will be a development of an existing consortium, which for nearly thirty years has successfully fostered and coordinated collaborate radiation protection related research within the EU.

The proposed network will enhance collaboration in four areas:
i) Radiation carcinogenesis,
ii) Mechanisms and treatment of deterministic effects,
iii) standardisation of external dosimetry for radiobiology and
iv) Biokinetics and treatment of external and internal contamination.
The network proposes to arrange a set of workshops and symposia as well as a set of standardisation procedures including specific laboratory intercomparisons. The results of these collaborative efforts will also be continuously disseminated by the use of a printed Newsletter, a website and a pathological database.

The general objective is to provide a platform for bringing together scientists who are working in various fields related to the biological effects of radiation and the internal dosimetry of radionuclides. It will be based on the existing structure of the European Late Effects Project Group (EULEP), which has 30 years experience in establishing collaboration between scientists within the EU. This has included the fostering of radiation protection related research; the organisation of workshops and symposia; the standardisation of pathology and dosimetry; and the preparation of state-of-the art reports. A number of EULEP initiatives have provided the basis for major cost shared actions within t he European Community Radiation Protection research programme. This approach will be carried forward in four key areas: Radiation carcinogenesis. Mechanisms and treatment of deterministic effects. Standardisation of external dosimetry. Biokinetics and treatment of external and internal contamination It is further planned to maintain a watching brief on research worldwide and to evaluate this critically in order to provide input into future EU programmes.
