Cel The objective of the project will be to develop a novel barge (PACSCAT) for transporting freight along Europe's inland waterways at significantly greater speeds than is possible with current barge designs. Such a river freighter could carry substantial payloads cost-effectively, and transfer freight traffic from road to water. To assess technical feasibility, the concept has been explored using a small-scale model which has been tank tested. These results have indicated that wash height and power demand would be acceptable, and have shown other advantages such as the ability to operate in shallow waters. It is now necessary to evaluate market access, novelty and economics. The exploratory award would support this work, and lead directly to a further project of technology development and commercialisation, involving a wider range of industrial partners.
