Low temperature near-nett powder metallugy route for the manufacture of complex shaped wear resistant parts

Obiettivo

The proposal addresses the problem of producing high-density, high speed steel (HSS) components by a powder metallurgical process capable of being performed using standard (mesh-belt) furnaces. The aim is to identify alloying elements that will permit the sintering temperature in nitrogen atmospheres to be reduced from the current 1250C (under vacuum) to 1 150C or below.
The objectives are:
(i) Establish the optimum alloying additions and operating conditions for sintering at 1150C.
(ii) Quantify improvements to part densities and mechanical properties.
(iii) Demonstrate a continuous, cost effective process that produces near-nett shaped components. The benefits to the SME partners will include access to markets for HSS components currently controlled by US companies, the ability to use existing equipment and the reduction of the need for secondary finishing processes.
