Breeding and releasing of pepper (capsicum annuum l.) f1 hybrids resistant to root-knot nematodes (meloidogyne spp.), assisted by molecular markers

Cel

Molecular markers of disease resistance genes are a very recent efficient tool for plant breeding. In a high competitive European market, they offer to breeders or seed companies an opportunity to help selection phase and to gain time in breeding scheme, so to develop a strategic advance. They are also a way for better understanding genetic resistance mechanisms. Root-knot nematode resistance is an alternative practice to the use of toxic fumigants as methyl bromide compounds for soil disinfections. This kind of chemical will be withdrawn in Europe in the coming years. Aim of our project is to introduce two root-knot nematode resistant genes into pepper parental lines, with successive crosses under conventional breeding method. Resistant plants will be controlled by molecular markers, which have to be found with mapping method. Finally, experimental F1 hybrids will be obtained and checked nil trials for their agronomical performances, in European pepper production basins.
