Biokinetics and dosimetry of internal contamination

Objective

The assessment of doses and risks from radionuclide exposures is critically dependent on the development of reliable biokinetic and dosimetric models to represent the behaviour of radionuclides in the body and energy deposition in sensitive cells. This proposal from eleven EU partners has the objective of providing such models, targeting specific uncertainties, including: doses to regions of the gut and other tissues following radionuclide ingestion; the time-course of urinary and faecal excretion of radionuclides in relation to body content and intake; doses to newborn children from radionuclides transferred in breast-milk; and, consideration of dose distribution within tissues and cells. Experimental approaches to the improvement of models will include: human biokinetic studies using stable isotopes; animal studies to assess dose distribution in the gut; and in vitro studies of dose deposition in cells.
